Gluten Free trip to Naples Italy

Just spent an incredible 4 days/5 nights in Naples. Going in December was a great time oof year to travel here, it's not as cold as Ireland and you have all the Christmassy feel with the lights. The highly of the trip was definitely the food, although it was interesting to go see Pompeii and the underground.

Every meal we have was unreal. Spotted loads of gluten free signs and notices on restaurants.

Pizzeria Antonio Sorbillo

There are loads of Sorbillo pizza places but this one on Via dei Tribunali, 38 had gluten free listed on the menu and according to google lots of good gluten free reviews. I got the Il Mio Sud with broccoli cream, Nduja (spicy port sauce) and buffalo stracciata cheese. The base was soft spongy but also crispy on outside. Probally one of the best pizza's I've ever had.

Amiro Restaurant & Lounge Bar

Lunch, gluten free bread, pasta was so delicious, one of the best, cooked perfectly, and sauce was incredible. Portion dive Perfect for lunch.

Portico Pizzeria e Trattoria

Big gluten free sign outside, wasn’t sure if it could top last night but it was delicious. The base was a little thicker but still very spongy and little chewy compared to Sorbillo but still excellent. I went for the Diablo, salami was super crispy. gluten free beer, Pernoni!

Zero Zero Grano

This is a 100% gluten free spot with vegan and vegetarian options too. Delighted we booked a table on The Fork before arriving because this restaurant is bite sized with only six small tables nestled smugly. As a means of shocking the system, we reintroduce our palates to meat and vegetables (pizza and pasta had been the orders of the days for three days straight). First time having some veg and protein on this trip. Had some friarigelli for starters.  The bread was top class, one of the best gluten free ones I've tried.

Pizzeria Del Purgatorio

A minced mushroom and truffle base with wild mushrooms, ham and cheese on top. First of all the base looked exactly the same as the other gluten ones that came out, it was light and fluffy and spongey. It was an extra €4 for the gluten free but when it is this good it was worth every penny. It also took a little longer to make because of the extra precautions for gluten free.

Gerolomini - Trattoria Pop Napoletana

Really lovely little restaurant with a big Gluten Free / Senze Glutine sign outside the front window. Staff were really friendly and loads of gluten free and vegetarian options. I got the mushroom pasta which was delicious.

Antica Trattoria del nico

I was dying to try some Carbonara being in Italy and all, but it was a little hard to find since it is more of a Rome thing. But I did manage to find it in this little restaurant and it did not dissapoint. Really creamy and delicious.

Bowl Napoli

It seems to reach a point on every trip to Italy that you have hit a wall with pizza and pasta and it's time for some fresh greens. This poke bowl cafe was the perfect break that was needed. Lots of options to choose from and the owner was very particular about cross contamination and gluten free options.

Bakeries in Naples

Finally I need to give a mention to the bakeries where we feasted almost daily. I feel like I could have used a full month here to try everything.

Leopoldo

Fully gluten free bakery with so many options, it's just not possible to try everything. Lots of sweet and savoury too. The fried dough balls called struffoli were delicious. The foot-long pizza focaccia with cheese was amazing. They also has some supplì which are deep fried rice coroquettes.

Rescigno

I probably only would have just went to Leopoldo because it had everything but we were staying right beside Rescigno and it turns out it had a huge Gluten Free section. Everything I tried was amazing, they had different options everyday. The pastry with the pistacio filled cream was one of my favourites. The sausage rolls and mini pizzas was a lovely breakfast one of the mornings. The Taralli was amazing, like little savoury biscuits, great for snacking on when walking around the city.
